sanctuary
This island is around the area of Maine on the East Coast of the United States of America. It is plentiful, with good soil, good weather and very little in the way of the bad. It is currently run by a High Council at the top of it's very small government.

The island is magical in it's very nature. It attracts both normal human beings and supernatural beings to it. The people of the town who aren't supernatural themselves are unaware of the magical forces animating it, and tend to have period typical attitudes in accordance about magic. The magical beings that are on the island are generally quiet about their own powers, in order to keep their heads down and escape prosecution. (Unless they are on the High Council).

The island also is governed in such a way that players are allowed to be inclusive of varying identities, and the island can magically attract people from far away, tricking them into thinking it's closer to their homelands than what they know.

Notably, the island does not have a capitalistic set up. Everything is freely traded or bartered or gifted. The island has a biodiverse set up, but there are still parts where some people don't venture too far out.

There have been a number of disappearances and deaths on the island that don't always work with the established paradise. Most are written off as being accidents, people leaving the island to go back, or other excuses that are growing thinner and thinner.

major places in sanctuary

THE CHURCH HOUSE. The church house is situated on the tallest point of the island. It is a rather simple place, mostly made out of wood, with a pulpit, a basement, and with pews. On Sundays, there are sermons and usually people who go are provided with food.

THE RED FOREST. On the north-west side of the island, which houses, as it implies, trees with huge, sprawling red trunks. The trees grow tall, usually change with the weather but are almost never bare. The forest has a wide range of wild life, and the residents are aware that there are things in the forest that can kill them. More than a few people have ventured in and not come out; it's usually written off as someone being foolish.

DEAR MEADOW. Located on the south-east side of the island is a huge, open meadow. It's usually sunny, with springy grass and moss, and is known to be a particularly peaceful part of the island.

STAR PORT. The main port on the island, which usually is the point where people come onto the island by boat. There is rarely traffic out, with plenty of traffic in at certain points of the year. Fishing is allowed here, and it's almost the lowest part of the island.

THE LIGHTHOUSE. Located in the port, the lighthouse is staffed at all times by three people.

THE MARKET. On the south-west side of the island, the market is open to all. As there is no money exchanged on Sanctuary, the market runs on a gift economy between all residents. There are a few permanent shops at the market as well, and every season, a fair is thrown at the market.
residents of sanctuary
the residents of sanctuary are split into two main categories. universally, it is agreed upon that there is rarely ever large trouble on sanctuary, and rarely ever is it brought up that things seem to be perfect.

please note that one category is subjected to caps. it's unlikely that we'll lift this cap, and they are first come, first serve. if someone drops from the game, that cap will open back up for people ti fill it until we're 3/4ths through the game. once that has hit, we will close all caps and close all new holds and additions to teh game so that we can wrap up without a problem.

if you wish to submit a magical being, please do so! we have very few limits on what you can and cannot bring and willing to talk with anyone on beings they want to bring.

magical beings (0/12)
The magical beings that the island is attracting are mainly witches, warlocks, familiars, and fantastical creatures. The island, to them, feels like a comforting beacon, and thus they have come to the populous. The magic users are generally born with their abilities or constitutions, and draw their magic from themselves, though they will find that if they ever used their magic in secret on the island, they are very, very powerful. More than what they normally would be.

While the island is relatively safe, many magical beings have kept quiet on their own powers fearing both that prejudicial attitudes were carried with them, and that they will be prosecuted. Some have told their families, but many have not.

humans
humans are the biggest populace on sanctuary. they are the ones who are mostly in charge, and they generally seem to be outwardly the same as others. they live their lives, there are a few deaths from natural causes, and they enjoy the tranquility.

that's not truly the case, though.

humans on sanctuary are more suspecitible to some of the more passive magic on sanctuary. humans find that they live longer, healthier lives. quite literally, there are adults on the island who live longer lives, who seem to heal from things that should have killed them and illness is very rare. whenever an illness occurs, it tends to be very acute and sometimes, there are deaths. hence, there is usually a shock whenever someone dies of things that are more typical causes found off of the island. it's very rare for births to go wrong as well.

the high council (0/6)
The High Council consists of six people who are elected to this position. It is a lifetime position, and all who enter into the High Council know the secret of the island: namely that there is a Being that keeps the crops, weather, and people healthy and well, a Being that they must sacrifice to at least three times a year. The Being is only accessible through a series of tunnels in the main Church that only the council is aware of. It is held in a trap beneath the Church, forced to serve the council at their will — but then again, it is feeding well on what it has been given. (At least, the council always thinks of it this way.)

All members of the council are open to anyone, magical or human, but are capped at six currently. NPCs will be used if we can't use all six. The Council members also live in a special Council Village on the island that is a little fancier than parts of the island.

The Being currently is angry at the Council as it feels that the sacrifices given to it lately have been boring and stale. The Being is demanding more sacrifices – sacrifices that the Council is wary to deliver as the Being is starting to insinuate that it no longer wants plain humans. It wants humans and the magical beings that have flocked to the island. This is a shock to the council, to know that there are more things like it among them.
